In short, the Global Medical Brigades mission is to provide healthcare in countries where access is limited and to develop sustainable health initiatives while respecting the country's culture.
Global Brigades began in 2004 when they made their first trip to Honduras as GMB. At the time, they solely operated as a division of Sociedad Amigos de los Ninos, a Honduran charitable organization. Participants from university clubs formed an international network to provide healthcare in several under served communities. In 2007, Global Brigades was formalized in the United States. Today, GB has expanded to include additional brigades such as Architecture, Business, Dental, Environment, Law, Microfinance, Public Health and Water. Through utilizing a holistic model, GMB is able to successfully conduct preliminary needs assessments, treat patients with the highest ethical standards, and much more by working with other GB programs to improve the water, sanitation, and economic infrastructures. The organization has also expanded to Panama, and as of November 2010, the beautiful African country of Ghana as well.
Every year, over 3,000 student volunteers and health professionals travel to Central America and Africa to establish mobile medical clinics in under-resourced communities. Each partnering community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months during which hundreds of patients are treated. Volunteers assist by delivering public health workshops, triaging, taking vital signs and more. In between brigades, GMB's Community Health Worker program facilitates follow-up and communication with local community leaders in order to sustain a consistent level of health care.
As a Class III SGA organization, our goal is to provide students with the amazing opportunity to travel and truly make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Through fundraising events, not only will we be able to raise enough funds to send our members on brigades and purchase the medicines necessary, but also to educate our campus community. It is our purpose to work together as an organization, as well as with other organizations, to strengthen the leadership and interpersonal skills of our students. Above all, we strive to exemplify that through unity, we can conquer challenges and accomplish ambitious goals. Strength is in numbers.
Join us and the thousands of student volunteers that participate each year!
